Procedures for NCSU Students to take Courses Elsewhere for Credit-Transfer back to NCSU

Prior approval required

Each year a few students in our Mathematics curricula take courses at other institutions for the purpose of obtaining transfer credits which satisfy degree requirements at NCSU. Summer session courses are frequently used for this purpose.

The Advisers' Handbook specifies that such students must "make prior arrangements with their deans to insure receiving credit for the work done." The granting of such transfer credit involves evaluation in terms of "equivalent" courses at NCSU. In order to minimize difficulties and misunderstanding, there is a uniform request form (and procedure) which will be used by the Mathematics Department. A copy of the request form is available in SAS 2108 or you may download the Equivalency Form.

The courses most readily approved for such transfer credit are those which can be used in the humanities/social sciences category. Courses to satisfy specific curriculum course requirements and courses for use as mathematics electives, or technical electives in either the MA or AMA programs should be scheduled here on the NC State campus (except under very special circumstances).

To submit such a request, a student should obtain specific information concerning the desired course(s) at the other institution (course number, title, catalog description, etc.) and then consult with his/her adviser or the Scheduling Officer

Proceedures After Taking the Courses

1. Have an official copy of your transcript sent directly to NC State's Registration and Records
2. If one or more courses are incorrectly or incompletely listed, then you should collect course materials (e.g. syllabus and final exam), and contact the Math Department's Scheduling Officer.
