Advice for Mathematics Students about
Taking Courses at Another University
A number of courses at community colleges
and other universities are automatically
approved for credit at NC State.
Other courses taken elsewhere must be approved
by the appropriate department for credit at NC State. In
addition, the Mathematics Department will determine whether
the course is acceptable in your curriculum.
The courses most readily approved are those
in the Humanities and Social Sciences category. Courses
that satisfy specific curriculum requirements, mathematics
electives, and technical electives in either the MA or AMA
program should generally be taken at NC State.
If you are considering taking a course elsewhere
that is not automatically approved for credit at NC State:
- Gather information about the course (number,
title, catalog description, etc.).
- Discuss your plan with your academic advisor
or the Mathematics Department's Director
of Undergraduate Programs.
- Ask the relevant department if the course
will be approved for credit at NC State.
- Complete the Mathematics Department's
Equivalency Form and submit
it to the Undergraduate Secretary. The purpose of this
form is to let you know whether the course is acceptable
in your curriculum.
- We will let you know if your plan is approved.
If you have taken a mathematics course elsewhere:
- Have an official copy of your transcript
sent to the NC State Department of Registration
and Records.
- After the transcript has been processed,
the course should appear on your Automated Degree Audit.
- Check for mistakes. If the course is not
listed or is incorrectly or incompletely listed, collect
course materials (e.g., syllabus and final exam) and contact
the appropriate department.

If you have questions, contact the
Mathematics Department's Director
of Undergraduate Programs.
