| The Levine-Anderson Award is given each year to the NC State student who has the best performance on the Putnam Competition.
Professor Jack Levine joined NC State in 1935. After his retirement, until 1995 he remained active in teaching classes without pay, and was quite active in his research. His research endeavors included cryptography, tensors, and mathematical physics. His research record comprises more than 100 publications. Dr. Levine was also named an NC State Outstanding Teacher in 1970, which speaks for the high quality of his instruction. The award, bearing his name, was established by Jack himself and by the generous contributions of others.
In 1983, the family and friends of Professor Charles Anderson contributed to the fund, and the name was changed to the Levine-Anderson Award. Professor Anderson came to NC State as an instructor of mathematics in 1953. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1970 and to associate professor in 1983. He was an effective and dedicated teacher who was recognized by the University in 1970. For those of us who knew him, it was his commitment to his colleagues and students that we shall remember.
