I have received just one correct submission - from the winner identified above.

    March 2005 problem PDF, LaTeX
March 2005 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF LaTeX
I have received several correct submissions. As always in these situations, the winner was determined based on the earliest submission. Regarding the actual winning solution posted above, I am pretty sure that the required factorization could have been achieved without using Maple. This is mathematics, after all...

    February 2005 problem PDF, LaTeX
February 2005 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF LaTeX
I have received several correct submissions. As always in these situations, the winner was determined based on the earliest submission. I apologize for being a little late with psoting the March problem.

    January 2005 problem PDF, LaTeX
January 2005 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF LaTeX
    Textbook solution: PDF LaTeX
January is a slow month, there was only one correct submission, which is posted above. Along with the actual winning solution by Mr. Pike, I am posting another solution, which is shorter.

    December 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
    December 2004 winner:   Not declared
    Solution: PDF, LaTeX
This month the activity was low (holidays?), I have received only one submission that, unfortunately, did not contain a correct argument. Therefore, I am not declaring a winner for December, but you may still win in January...

    November 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
November 2004 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF, LaTeX
As last month, I have received a number of submissions, and the winner, as always, was determined based on the earliest submission. This is becoming a race against the clock...

    September 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
September 2004 winner:   Mr. Jeff Gaither
    Condensed winning solution: PDF LaTeX
I have received several correct submissions. As always in such cases, the winner was determined on the basis of the earliest submission. As the actual winning solution contained a very detailed lengthy argument, I am posting its shortened version.

    May 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
May 2004 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF LaTeX
There will be a recess for the summer. No contest problems will be posted for the months of June, July, and August. The constest will resume in September 2004.

    April 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
April 2004 winner:   Mr. Jason DeVito
    Winning solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I have received only one submission this month
that did contain the winning solution. I have taken the liberty to correct this solution slightly before posting, to compensate for the apparent problems with e-mail transmission.

    March 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
March 2004 winner:   Mr. Paul Smith
    Winning solution: PDF
    Textbook solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I have received a number of submissions that conatined correct arguments. The winner was determined on the basis of the earliest submission. The winning solution is posted here along with what I refer to as the textbook solution, which happens to be much shorter.

    February 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
February 2004 winner:   Mr. Jeffrey Gaither
    Winning solution: PDF
    Textbook solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I have received only one submission which has
been determined to qualify as a correct solution. It still contains though some
intuitive arguments as far as properties of functions judged through the behavior of their derivatives. Therefore, in addition to the actual winning solution, I also
provide another solution, which is short and yet rigorous.

    January 2004 problem PDF, LaTeX
January 2004 winner:   Mr. Paul Smith
    Winning solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I have received three submissions altogether and and each one contained a correct solution! The winner was determined on the basis of the earliest submission.

    December 2003 problem PDF, LaTeX
    December 2003 winner:   Not declared
    Correct solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I have received two submissions that contained
discussion on convergence of the sequence $x_n=\cos(x_{n-1})$. This discussion may potentially lead to a correct proof, provided that the convergence is established rigorously. However, my determination is that the arguments in either of the submissions did not qualify as the full proof.

    November 2003 problem PDF, LaTeX
November 2003 winner:   Mr. John Deszyck
    Winning solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
I received several submissions that did contain
some correct thoughts but have stopped a little short of a full-blown correct solution. I have also received a more comprehensive solution that was submitted later than the winning solution posted here. Enjoy the next month problem and have Happy Holidays!

    October 2003 problem PDF, LaTeX
October 2003 winner:   Mr. Paul Smith
    Winning solution: PDF
    Comments from the coordinator:
Quite amazingly, the winning solution was submitted just several hours after the problem was posted. The next solution, which also was correct, was submitted by the previous month winner three hours later. The race is getting tight :-). I know of a different correct solution, not the same as the winning solution posted here.

    September 2003 problem PDF, LaTeX
September 2003 winner:   Mr. Brian Pike
    Winning solution: PDF, LaTeX
Comments from the coordinator: PDF, LaTeX
