Choosing a Core Math Class

Almost all math students start in the Calculus sequence. MA 141 is Calculus I, MA 241 is Calculus II, and MA 242 is Calculus III.

Placement: You probably don't have your AP scores yet. Pre-register for the class you think you belong in, and change your schedule if you find that you guessed your score incorrectly. You can change your schedule up to the first couple of days classes meet. NCSU's placement information is online. General placement info link is provided by admissions.

Stretch: Stretch into the most challenging class you qualify for. If you find yourself in above your head, you can drop back (e.g. from 241 to 141), but it is really difficult to move from 141 to 241 if you have missed some topics that you have never seen.

Fall 2012

The following sections and times are preferred for math majors

MA 141, Lecture Sec 6, problem section 6A (Section 4 is ok too)
MA 241, Sec 4 (or 40 honors). Contact Dr. Scroggs if you need to be added to this section
MA 242, Sec 3, 6, 8, or 40 (honors)

Recommended: MA 205 in Fall 2012 followed by a special section of MA 493 in Spring 2013 will satisfy your Linear Algebra requirement.

Choosing an Advanced Math Class or an Elective Math Class

More Advanced Math: The math core is 141, 241, 242, 225, 341, 405, 407, and 425. The pre-requisites are indicated in a map, and the description of the courses is available at Registration and Records.

Introduction to Programming: MA 116 is a good choice to learn about programming, and it satisfies an important requirement in your major. Contact us if you want this course, and you have trouble getting into this course.

Important! If one of the above sections are full or restricted so you cannot register, email us using undergraduate_mathematics@ncsu.edu.
