How to choose ECG/MA/ST* 689 or ECG/MA/ST* 693?

You must register for three (3) or more hours of ECG/MA/ST* 689 or 693.

If you do not complete your project or make adequate progress while registered for 6**, you will be given the grade of "U" for Unsatisfactory.

Grade (internship) If you choose to do an internship, your performance will be jointly evaluated by your Financial Math advisor and your internship advisor.

Grade (project/report) If you choose to do a project, your performance will be evaluated at the discretion of by your project supervisor, usual a member of Financial Math Faculty.

689, 3 units, Non-Thesis Master Continuous Registration - Full Time Registration

For students in non-thesis master's programs who have completed all credit hour requirements for their degree but need to maintain full-time continuous registration to complete incomplete grades, projects, final master's exam, etc. Students may register for this course a maximum of one semester.

  • Three hours is considered full-time registration, often helpful for international students (NCSU regulation link).
  • Register for this course ONLY if you have completed ALL your course requirements (6 core courses and 4 electives). You cannot sign up for any other courses when taking 689.
  • This course can be used for either an internship or a project.

693 (3 or more units) Master's Supervised Research

Instruction in research and research under the mentorship of a member of the Graduate Faculty.

  • Sign up for three (3) hours if
    • you are taking two other courses, or
    • if you are taking one other course and full-time registration is not necessary
  • Sign up for six (6) hours if you are taking one other course and you need to maintain full-time registration, such as an international student, or for financial aid.
  • This course can be used for students working on a project, or interns who also want to take additional courses. Students must be registered for a total of 9 hours to be considered fulltime.

*The designation of the course, such as ECG, or MA, or ST, will correspond to the home department of your faculty mentor.
